The following are resources that may be helpful for those in the community who have special needs, have a member of the family with special needs, or who work with individuals who have special needs.

The VDOE website has TONS of resource information for our community regarding Special Education, the IEP process, and disabilities.   (look at both the main body of the pages and check out the links on the right sides of the pages) Take some time to browse this valuable resource!

SELF ADVOCACY
  • I'm Determined  "Self-determination" is about youth with disabilities taking control of their lives.  This website contains information and strategies to assist a youth with disabilities in developing self-determination skills.

    • Formed Families Forward    Formed Families Forward provides consultation and support to families and agency personnel to help them meet the special education needs of their children and youth. "

PERTAINING TO PARTICULAR DISABILITIES



  • Autism
    • VCU-ACE, Virginia Commonwealth University's Autism Center for Excellence  
      • "The VCU Autism Center for Excellence (VCU-ACE) is a university-based technical assistance, professional development, and educational research center for Autism Spectrum Disorders in the Commonwealth of Virginia"     
      • This group offers online training courses that pertain to autism education that may be of particular interest to parents and educators.
    • Northern Shenandoah Autism Resource
    • Autism Society of Northern Virginia       Besides having lots of information about autism, there are links to its Facebook page and a Yahoo Online Virtual Support Group.  Click here to go to the Yahoo Group page.  
    • Essential Pieces  Education Group for Parents and Those Who Care for Children on the Autism Spectrum.  "Essential Pieces" is a group that meets in sessions of roughly 8 weeks at a time, several times during the year.  Additionally, a social group is available for children, if they are pre-registered (sessions fill up, so register as soon as you can!)
    • Association for Science in Autism Treatment   An excellent website that has information about the various treatments for autism.  This resource is useful for parents, educators, and for anyone who is looking for more info about autism.
